Leading the way to recyclable packaging

We are so excited to share great news with you

Our journey from glass jars to grade 1 PET jars and bottles is evolving. Over 1 year in the making, we are stepping up our efforts to offer sustainable packaging for our products: spajar is moving to rPET.

In addition to already existing reuse and refill options, we are now able to transition spajar’s already fully recyclable PET packaging over to Australian made rPET (recycled polyethylene terephthalate). This comes entirely from recycled plastic bottles and containers that might have otherwise ended up in landfills or oceans. Our rPET is BPA free and even food grade compliant.

Over the next months you will see our clear PET jars and bottles gradually being replaced with beautiful amber colour rPET packaging – 100% recycled materials that are also 100% recyclable. How good is that?!

Recycling PET still isn’t a perfect solution, and it doesn’t change the fact that once plastic is made, it is here to stay for a very long time. However, finding a new life for these already-made products is definitely a step in the right direction.

When you do your bit by recycling PET products, you are offering them a second life, which is one step closer to creating a circular economy. Because PET is such a popular material, recycling it to create new products has the potential to have a significant positive impact. So keep up the good work by reusing, refilling and eventually placing your rinsed out spajar jars and bottles into the recycling bin.

Did you know that recycling a ton of PET containers not only saves 5.6 cubic metres of landfill space but saves energy too. Creating a plastic (water) bottle from 100% recycled content uses 75% less energy than its virgin counterpart* – how is that for reducing our carbon footprint?

At present, creating rPET still costs more than creating virgin PET plastic due to the added processing steps. You will see this reflected in a first ever price increase across our range. We are confident that you appreciate spajar moving to rPET, reflecting our efforts to reduce our waste footprint whilst providing products to empower your life.

I can’t express strongly enough how grateful I am for your continued support of spajar committing to lead by example!

In time increasing consumer demand will drive more and more brands and retailers to transition away from the linear take-make-dispose model of consumption, to one which is truly circular by design. It is vital that plastic packaging is recycled into food grade plastic packaging and not downcycled. We are effectively building ‘momentum towards a plastics system that works. Applying the principles of the circular economy, it brings together key stakeholders to rethink and redesign the future of plastics, starting with packaging’**.
