Five reasons why Vitamin C should be part of your skincare routine

What’s the Vitamin C trend all about?

Vitamin C was first discovered over a 100 years ago and has since become a cornerstone of modern nutrition. These days, we understand the importance of ensuring we have a balanced intake of fresh fruit and vegetables in our diet versus the days of scurvy at sea.

As well as being part of a healthy diet, there are also many benefits to including vitamin C into our skincare moisturising routines, some of which you may not be familiar with.

We’ve put together our top five reasons why we love it so much and why we think you should too.

1. It produces collagen and elastin

As well as being great for healing wounds quickly by producing collagen and elastin, these are also two of the most effective ingredients when it comes to slowing the signs of ageing. Collagen reduces wrinkles and when applied via a good quality vitamin C moisturiser skincare routine, smooths the skin. Elastin improves the skin quality. A skincare routine which includes vitamin C will reduce the signs of ageing by enhancing production of collagen and elastin in your body, both of which decrease as we age. So, let’s put them back in!

2. A great anti inflammatory

Rashes, redness and other irritations are greatly reduced when using vitamin C is on the skin. Whether the cause is from sun, hormones or conditions such as hyperpigmentation, it will assist with healing damaged capillaries and even out your skin tone. It can also support the immune system and relieve skin conditions such as acne and psoriasis. What’s not to love about that?!

3. Hydration for the skin

Vitamin C is literally hydration for your skin. It helps it retain water by acting as a barrier. By decreasing dryness, vitamin C provides moisture to your skin and prevents it from becoming oily.

Research has shown that healthy skin has high levels of vitamin C which is a great reason why you should include a good moisturiser in your skincare routine.

Achieving a dewy glow compared to having a dull, lack lustre appearance is definitely something we are a fan of.

4. Reduces the appearance of dark undereye circles

Nothing makes a person look tired more than dark circles under the eyes. If this is you, you’ll know only too well how tiring it is to constantly deal with those ‘you look tired’ comments which come even if you are well rested.

The good news is that vitamin C can help reduce dark circles and soften the appearance of undereye bags. When applied for a period of six months, studies found that it thickened the eyelid dermis and concealed dark colouration which has been caused by congested blood. Sounds a bit macabre which is also another reason to get rid of it!

5. Protects from sun damage

Whilst we have become much more aware of the damage that the sun can do to the skin, particularly in countries such as Australia where we are blessed with favourable weather for much of the year, going out without any protection at all, isn’t something anyone should be doing.

Sun damage is caused by free radicals. As vitamin C is rich in antioxidants, it gifts the free radicals with an electron wrapped up in an atom which the free radicals are missing, hence the damage. The science behind skincare is quite fascinating.

How do I pick a good vitamin C skincare product?

Now we know a bit more about the benefits of vitamin C as part of a healthy skincare routine, how can you be sure that you’re using the best vitamin C moisturiser for your skin?

The chances are you’re already aware of the huge range of options on the market, but the key is to look at the ingredients. How many do you recognise? Are they organic or mainly chemicals?

Our range at spajar is a powerhouse for your skin and includes native Kakadu plum extract, which packs the highest levels of vitamin C of any fruit. That’s right, vitamin C is not just found in oranges! Kakadu plum is a superfood for your skin and behaves like an alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA).

We also love green coffee bean and Abyssinian oils, both of which stimulate the production of collagen and elastin which as we now know, slow the signs of ageing. Omega 3, 6 and 9 fatty acids and vitamin E, are also loved by your skin, ensuring it remains super hydrated and gives you a healthy glow.

Bearberry brightens your complexion, Seabuckthornberry supercharges cell regeneration and elderberry contributes to protecting the skin from sun damage. All of these are found in our vitamin C products, but we don’t stop there. We’re also fans of aloe vera, radish root and calendula. Combining these with the core ingredient of vitamin C is how we achieve the award-winning formulas which your skin has been waiting for.
